Caring for your teeth doesn't really have to be costly. Fortunately, for us, there is an all-natural product we can use to promote healthier teeth – organic extra virgin coconut oil.
For years now, organic extra virgin coconut oil has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for better oral health through a process called oil pulling. In this technique, a tablespoon of coconut oil is swished in the mouth for at least 5 minutes. After which, it is spit out to get rid of the bad bacteria.
If you think oil pulling with coconut oil is not enough, these reasons might convince you to use such oil for your teeth.
1. No harsh chemicals are present.
Commercial toothpastes sold in the supermarket contain harsh chemicals like triclosan, which is often associated with health problems like endocrine disruption and antibiotic resistance.
Another harmful chemical found in extra virgin coconut oil is fluoride. It is an industrial waste product, which when consumed in large amounts, may poison you.
Organic extra virgin coconut oil, on the other hand, is safe to use. It does not contain any of the mentioned.
2. It fights cavity-causing bacteria.
According to various research, massaging coconut oil into the gums at least 10 minutes a day may effectively keep decay, plaque, and cavity-causing bacteria at bay.
3. It is budget-friendly.
To keep your teeth protected against disease-causing bacteria, all you need is a small amount of organic extra virgin coconut oil. That means, if you purchase a jar of coconut oil, you will have more to use in the succeeding months. It's great news for those who are on a tight budget and want to save!
4. It can be used by dogs, too!
Dogs shouldn't really brush with toothpastes manufactured for humans as there are substances present in these products that are toxic for our pets. But with coconut oil, you know they are in safe hands. Coco oil is effective for both human beings and dogs. As a matter of fact, dogs also enjoy the same oral health benefits from it.
5. No foaming agents are used.
Most toothpastes we purchase today contain surfactants, such as sodium laureth sulfate, which cause the foaming reaction of toothpastes. Though they are essential in the production of commercial toothpastes, chances are, they may interfere and affect the functioning of the taste buds. If you notice, every after you brush, the food you eat tastes bitter. That is the effect of these surfactants.
6. Organic extra virgin coconut oil is easy to use.
If you want to use organic extra virgin coconut oil as a toothpaste, all you need is 2 tablespoons of coconut oil, 2 tablespoons of baking soda, and 5 drops of an essential oil of your choice. Mix the three ingredients together until you form a paste-like consistency and use like your regular toothpaste.
