Fat bombs won’t blow up your diet
Eating more dietary fats when you’re trying to slim down or maintain a healthy weight seems counterintuitive, but ketogenic diets suggest doing exactly that. Recently resurrected in the wildly popular low-carb/high-protein Paleo Diet, the ketogenic diet is based on the idea that when the body is forced into ketosis it burns fats instead of carbohydrates for energy. Burning more fat means more weight loss.
Studies have shown that in the short-term, ketogenic eating plans can lead to faster-than-average weight loss. They can also be helpful in controlling blood sugar and minimizing insulin spikes. The problem comes with maintaining what is essentially a low-calorie diet for the long run.
Consuming the right amount of healthy dietary fats is important no matter what diet plan you’re on, but it’s especially crucial on a ketogenic diet. Fats keep us satisfied, helping us feel full even when overall calorie intake is restricted. But choosing the right fats is key. With the exception of coconut oil, most saturated fats, especially animal fats, should be avoided.
A fat bomb is a crave-busting bite-sized package of instant energy that will keep you satisfied as you resist high-carb snacks. When done right, they provide the good-for-you fats the body needs without the bad-for-you extras you’d get from say, that breakroom doughnut that won’t stop calling your name. Fat bombs are typically made from healthy fats like coconut oil, olive oil, nuts and nut butter, avocados or butter made from grass-fed cattle. They can be sweet or savory and can be as simple as scooping out a teaspoon of delicious cold-pressed Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil straight from the jar into your mouth.
The term is trendy, but fat bombs are really nothing new. Using pre-measured “bombs” are simply one way to make sure you’re getting the desired amount of healthy fat in your diet.
