Body scrubs are a skin care staple found in most homes and spas today, and the benefits of using such products for the skin is near common knowledge at this point, and yet most are not aware that you can also use a scrub on your scalp (and they are just as luxurious as a spa, but half the price!). They are simple enough to both make and use as they work by stimulating the hair follicles and sloughing off dead skin cells, using a scrub on the scalp is very beneficial.
Just like your skin and how it can have various pimples, zits, blackheads or acne, clogged pores can also occur on the scalp, on top of flakiness (better known as dandruff), dryness which can lead to itchiness. Which can then lead to excessive scratching, and which can lead to bacterial infection if your scalp becomes too damaged. All of which are not the best for optimal scalp and hair health. By making your own scalp scrub, you can target all of these (imagined or real) concerns, or preemptively keep the health of your scalp and hair intact.
Additional benefits of scrubs that target the scalp are as follows: moisturizing for the skin and hair, increased blood circulation to your hair roots, and a deeper cleansing than traditional shampoo (shampoos can also damage your hair due to synthetic ingredients which are used in the production process) can provide, all of which create more healthy and beautiful looking hair, which helps you look your best.
Unfortunate as it may be, scrubs specifically for your scalp are not commonly found on store shelves (which if you ask me, shampoo companies should get on top of ASAP). But you can just as easily make your own DIY scalp scrub using common household ingredients (which allows you to get really creative with your ingredients!). For a natural, chemical-free scrub that is super cheap can be made using nearly household ingredients which you can find in your pantry and will leave your scalp feeling soft and smooth try this DIY scalp scrub recipe below.
Sea Salt, Honey, Lemon and Coconut Oil DIY Scalp Scrub
This highly effective scrub (and fairly cheap) requires just four simple ingredients: sea salt, honey, lemon, and a good quality of organic coconut oil.
2 tablespoons sea salt
1-2 tablespoons lemon juice
1-2 tablespoons organic coconut oil
1 tablespoon raw honey
Directions: Mix salt, lemon juice, honey, and organic coconut oil together until well combined. Apply mixture to wet hair and massage scrub into scalp for several minutes. Rinse well and follow with shampoo and conditioner.
The role and benefits of each ingredient:
Sea salt- Natural salt from the sea has detoxification properties, which draws out toxins and impurities from the skin. Sea salt also contains many key minerals that are absorbed directly through the skin into the bloodstream. The coarseness of the salt creates the texture needed to exfoliate dead skin and to eliminate product and sebum buildup.
Honey- Raw honey is an antimicrobial which works as a disinfectant, and is also moisturizing for the skin and hair. Be sure to use raw, uncooked honey for the best results. Commercial clover honey found on most grocery store shelves will not be the quality needed for the greatest benefits.
Lemon- Lemon used to both clarify and deodorize hair. It will help dissolve the product buildup, which deep cleanses.
Coconut oil- Naturally moisturizing, coconut oil allows the scrub to easily spread over the scalp. The hydrating properties of the coconut oil are also necessary for this DIY scalp scrub to relieve dryness and itching and can provide a natural remedy for dandruff.
Essential Oils- An optional ingredient would be to add a few drops essential oils to the mixture. You can use lavender, tea tree, or peppermint. This will have the added benefit of aromatherapy to relax you and will further stimulate your scalp.
This scalp scrub will stimulate hair growth, prevent hair loss from clogged follicles, cleanse and disinfect scalp. It can also clarify and moisturize both skin and hair, provide hair volume, and create an altogether healthier scalp. It is important to care for the skin on every part of the body, and the scalp is no exception.
